Grace discovers a box in her parents’ attic that contains enough suspicious items to cause her to believe that the people she had called Mom and Dad her whole life may not have been her real parents.
After recovering from the shock of her parents’ deaths, Grace Lindroth is tormented by the uncertainty of her identity and begins an arduous search for answers. When certain clues draw her to a boardinghouse once owned by Anna Vargas, she becomes convinced that Anna was her real mother. She believes the boardinghouse walls have been harboring vital secrets for years, but when she meets up with the cantankerous old woman who had bought the place after Anna’s death, she questions whether she’ll ever be able to peel back all the layers surrounding her parentage.
The lies and deceit that Grace unearths in her pursuit to validate her identity are shocking, complicated, and not all buried in the past. Does this force Grace to back down, or just heighten her determination uncover the whole truth?

Regarding Anna edition by Florence Osmund Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Excellent story, well-written, best read of 2017 so far. I read a great deal, and was ambivalent about this choice even after reading the beginning pages, yet something drew me to continue. I'd forgotten that many of my favorite books have started a bit slow or uninteresting, not grabbing me by my throat, hooked by what turned out to be forgettable stories. While I knew what would be discovered, it was like enjoying watching someone paint a picture knowing the outcome as paint is swept upon a canvas or a knitter turns yarn into the garment seen in a photo. I only wish more authors were as good at their craft. My only criticism is that the epilogue was a bit anti-climatic and unlike the rest of the book a little more preachy/political than the rest of the book. But like someone dressing their firstborn, the infant girl with the too big bow, it's forgivable. I recommend this book and look forward to more of this author's work.
Talk about a great novel with never a boring page, REGARDING ANNA by Florence Osmund fills the bill! Grace Lindroth, as a very young woman, found her parents both dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. As if that weren't shocking enough, she finds a box in the attic that seems to indicate they may not even have been her real parents! Grace cannot just let it go because she says "I couldn't face the future without understanding my past." Her personal life is virtually placed on hold while she even goes to the extent of training and getting licensed to be a private investigator, with her main motivation being to solve her own case along the way. Hers is not a simple case by a longshot, and she soon realizes that "things that happen to you in the past can mold you into someone you're not."

REGARDING ANNA is fascinating. Yes, it is a type of mystery, but it is more a wonderful human interest story. It is told by Grace herself--which I love--and the author absolutely amazed me with her ability to keep everything straight as she knit together several different plots. Meaningful to me as a reader is that the author supplied a generous epilogue. I love when you are in no way left hanging or wondering. REGARDING ANNA by Florence Osmund is a superb novel.
After her parents die in what is ruled as an accident, Grace is left on her own. Because she has reason to believe that she was adopted, she changes her career goal to become a Private Investigator. Her search for her roots lead to what was once a boarding house in years past and there she uncovers a multitude of hidden secrets. The first half of this book was wonderful. The secondary character, Minnie, was funny, cantankerous, smart, and fearless. As long as she was in the story, I couldn't put the book down. After her exit, the book started to drag and the ending, although a surprise, was a letdown for me.

This book is not a gritty, realistic mystery but is more than a 'cozy' mystery.
I enjoyed this book until Grace finally started getting answers from Essie, the real estate woman. Than all of a sudden, I became so confused that I had to go back and figure out who was who. Even now, I'm not sure. I never had a sense that it took place in the 60s nor did I feel any connection to the characters.
Regarding Anna by Florence Osmund is a novel about identity, belonging and finding one's place in the world. These topics are explored through the main character, Grace Lindroth, a young woman who works as a private detective, a field she gravitated to in order to solve her own personal mystery. After her parents die, Grace finds curious objects hidden in the attic that make her question her very identity.

Told in first person, Grace is a likable protagonist. She's at a lonely place in her life, and she feels she can't move forward until she figures out her past. While her skills as a P.I. are questionable, her strong moral character and empathy are never in doubt. The enjoyable subplots that center around her cases as a P.I. inject humor into this well-paced novel.

The other characters, including a crotchety old lady who lives in the home that Grace feels holds the key to her past, and Tymon, a man who fixes more than physical things, are realistic and complex.

The novel is set in the early sixties. Besides a few mentions of popular songs or television shows of the time, I didn't get a particular feel for the time period. Also, the technology that we have today was not in place. People relied on regular land lines and actually going to City Hall or the library to talk to staff and look up records.

The author puts the reader right in the setting, with vivid yet understated descriptions of the houses and neighborhoods in the Chicago area where the novel is set.

It is a well-written novel that I cherished reading.
I wish would classify Young Adult books as such. I probably would have enjoyed this book if I were 12 years old, like I enjoyed Nancy Drew. Yes, there's no Bess or Ned or roadster, but there are characters and a beat-up car that approximate them. And there are locked safes and trunks in the attic and hidden rooms. The main character is even a Private Investigator, so there's a little nod to Nancy's attorney father Carson Drew. and I guess Minnie could be a reincarnation of the caring housekeeper Hannah Gruen (?). All in all, not an adult read.
