Stewart Cooper, once a young lawyer of great promise now charged with a heinous, highly publicized crime. His brother, Perry, an incarcerated pill addict. Saul and Beatrice, deeply loving parents who wanted only the best for their sons. OUT OF IOWA is the story of this middle-class rural family, whose close-knit bonds are severely tested by a string of sudden, crippling adversities. Residents of a sprawling corn and soybean farm, the Coopers enjoy relative peace and harmony until the fateful summer of 2011. Prior to Perry’s arrest for armed robbery, and Stewart’s arrest two weeks later for an abhorrent cyber crime, life on the farm was normal and quiet. The family, long blessed with good fortune and free of strife, is now abruptly torn asunder, beleaguered by enormous hardships poverty, alcoholism, mental illness, and estrangement. These culminate in Stewart’s brief imprisonment, during which he fears for his life as well as his sanity. Saul and Beatrice descend rapidly into a deep, booze-fueled depression, Saul’s exacerbated profoundly by early-onset dementia. Plagued by alcoholism himself, of which he is in complete denial, Stewart begins to develop debilitating anxiety and severe agoraphobia. Forced to move back to the family farm after losing his job, he hides his liquor problem from everyone (including himself) and seeks intensive therapy. His stern, no-nonsense shrink may be the only one who can penetrate his fog of self-deception and help him to confront the fears and resentments underlying his angst. Inspired by the real-life experiences of the author, OUT OF IOWA is a heartbreaking tale of grief, loss, and redemption, of a family’s faltering attempts to overcome their tumultuous past and exorcise the demons that haunt them. Innovatively non-linear but straightforward in style, IOWA is a short book of tremendous emotional force, a unique and unforgettable family saga.

This book or perhaps I should say journal about life was a totally different piece of work for Michael Prescott. It provides the reader a perspective of the turmoil alcoholics endure. It was educational for me. I have a better understanding of the symptoms of alcoholism. It is so easy to be caught in the web of life and not be able to cope. I feel this is a must to read. Why? Because the main character could be you, a family member, or a friend. This was an enlightenment for me. After reading this all I could say was wow unbelievable

Boring, uninteresting, no real story. Just following a guy with problems of alcoholism going to jail for a couple of days for something he maybe didn't do...
This book showed up in the middle of a list of Michael Prescott /abby sinclair books. Having bought and enjoyed many Michael Prescott books I immediately bought it. Its very far removed from the thriller I was expecting. Beginning seemed okay, Middle was long drawn out and boring and the ending useless and i though how strange. I googled it to discover that this is not a book from that series.
I found the time line very confusing and its very difficult for me to enjoy a book that made all the characters so self destructive. I like good plot lines and don't necessarily enjoy reading a lot of fluff but this book was pretty depressing.
I love Michael Prescott's serial killers and tough women avengers. He is a master at character development and understanding how to keep the story moving and suspenseful. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this deviation from that theme but I was pleasantly surprised. Out of Iowa is told from the perspective of a highly intelligent young man struggling through life in a dysfunctional family and dealing with his own mental health issues and addictions. I laughed with him and cried with him in this very touching and personal journey. I loved this book. Thank you Michael Prescott.
Out of Iowa starts by drawing the reader in with just enough intrigue that needs to be expanded upon, which compels the reader to continue reading until the satisfactory end. The flashbacks are carefully and wonderfully placed and offer the perfect pace for what's happening in the present, what amount of history led to what's happening in the present, and the thoughts swirling in the character's mind related to what he is experiencing on many levels. What I believe to be an unintentional moral of this multidimensional story is terrifying and upsetting in such a brilliantly visceral way -- the tragic consequences of having a computer with Internet access and how it can go horribly and unthinkably wrong. The narrative appears to be so personal, in-depth, genuine and sharing of the humanness of the main character. I felt I was having a one-way conversation with a friend who was holding nothing back. This is the kind of book I can imagine leading to a movie. It played out in my head as I was reading, a sure sign of a great book.
Another great novel. The characters were well developed and a great plot. This novel was a great insight to the tragedy of alcoholism.
Prescott's writing is done with the sincerity that can only be obtained through personal experience. His prose is eloquent and his storyline is achingly tragic, while at the same time tangible. Cast into the abyss of addiction coupled with injustice in a litigious society, the protagonist fights valiantly to recover both his self respect and his career as a lawyer. His troubles are compounded by his family whom he loves dearly, but who have demons of their own. At the core of the story lies love in a merciless world and the constant battle to achieve self worth. Brilliantly told and highly recommended by someone who has had similar challenges in life...me!
